“I was being driven home from a race when I noticed my heart rate was dropping drastically, I had no feeling in my legs and my hands and arms began to tingle and feel numb. I started to panic and told my friend to get to hospital quickly. I lay the seat back and tried my hardest to control my breathing and emotions.”

Fast forward 2 years and many investigations covering everything from brain scans to heart MRIs, blood tests, epilepsy, checks, and a permanent ECG monitor being implanted in my chest. We still didn’t really know what was causing these episodes and I was having them multiple times a week! We did discover that I had a complication with my heartbeat and I had to accept that it was something I was going to have to live with. My heart surgeon, who, thankfully, was also a friend and fellow racer assured me that I was not going to drop dead and so I mostly got on with life.
The main problem during this time was that I went from a top performing athlete to somebody who couldn’t walk upstairs without getting out of breath. There were days where I would just sit and cry. I could not understand why I couldn’t just go for a walk anymore without being absolutely exhausted.

I had been medically checked for everything, and although there was a complication with my heart, I always felt, deep down inside that this was a nutrition issue. I visited maybe five or six different nutritionists during this time, and no matter how well they portrayed themselves. I always left with a cookie cutter program to follow, like they hadn’t even listened to me.
At a cost of £50-£300 for a hour consultation and no follow up I was left frustrated and angry. In one particular consultation I told the lady that I was anaphylactic and she sent me away with a food plan encouraging me to eat nuts!

I studied long and hard, every spare second of every day, everything and anything, I took courses, I read books, I read blogs. I studied solidly for years to qualify as a Level 4 Nutritionist, the highest qualified nutritionists in the country. I researched sports nutrition, nutrition for disabilities, specific nutrition for diabetes, I studied (and tried) every fad diet I came across, I researched the history of food the evolution of humans, I read some painfully long and boring science papers, and I studied vitamins, minerals and natural remedies that were portrayed to have positive cures. I needed to fix my health.
At this time, it was never my intention to use my knowledge to teach others but I was a coach, a sports coach, a peak performance coach, I coached athletes on their journey towards the Olympics, world-class athletes, bodybuilders, fitness models and para athletes to name a few and my nutrition knowledge clearly became very useful in that role.


Before long, I was coaching people from all walks of life, how to fuel themselves to peak performance and lifestyle nutrition started to take over from my sports coaching. I thrived on the impact that my knowledge was having on people but something still wasn’t right and it was making me sad.
My knowledge and expertise came at a huge cost, and I knew that it was only affordable for a select few. It has long been my ambition to provide my coaching to those that cannot afford my 1-2-1 time. Peak health and nutrition shouldn’t be available to just the wealthy.
One thing I realised when I started my nutrition journey is that any change I made had to be sustainable for life! Some of the extreme diets I tried really did work! I found I had more energy, more clarity, more focus and maybe even lost a few pounds and it broke my heart (pun not intended) that I had to stop eating that way but they just were not sustainable. I couldn’t enjoy life eating that way.
If you have tried diets in the past, maybe been successful but then, life happens, and your friends birthday is a whole weekend of eating/drinking and general debauchery!! You kind of have 2 choices:
A) Make excuses and stay home to stick to the diet never having a days fun again in your whole life or…
B) Throw the diet in the bin and party your pants off?

For me, having an athlete mentality, I found I was choosing option a! My health was as good, if not better than ever, I was back racing at a decent level but the pain of what I went through was still very raw and I never wanted to be back there again. Friends started asking why I never came out anymore, they noticed that has distanced myself from them and before long i just stop being invited. I knew I had to do work something out because I had become a massive fun sponge and I missed my friends.
I discovered that I could make some small changes, that I could ‘mostly’ stick to certain ways of eating that made me feel great but that actually, I could let my hair down, eat other things occasionally and this was a more sustainable way to stick to my new eating habits for life. Eventually, I even discovered that I could pretty much eat the diet I loved and wanted to eat and still keep control of my health and that is what I want to teach you!

You can not and will not lose weight and increase your health if you are forced to cut out everything that you love about life! Eating is a sociable thing, it’s a pleasurable thing, it’s a cultural thing!! Sure if we could just stop eating the same way you can stop drinking or smoking it would all be a whole heap easier wouldn’t it! But we can’t… eating IS an addiction! That’s because we have to eat to stay alive. Not only that but we want to enjoy eating. I don’t want to be afraid of eating and I don’t want you to be afraid either!
